The ICLR Pupillage Award

In recognition of the difficulties faced by many talented individuals during pupillage, the ICLR currently awards an annual bursary worth £13,000 in direct financial assistance to a pupil during the course of their 12 month pupillage in Chambers. The award was founded to mark ICLR’s 150th anniversary in 2015 and the first award was made the following year.

To be eligible to apply for the ICLR Pupillage Award, the candidate must demonstrate that:

1. They are taking up a confirmed offer of pupillage in the relevant year; and

2. The pupillage award they are to receive from chambers is not valued as being more than £30,000 per annum.

Applications will be subject to two criteria:

1. The candidate demonstrates merit; and

2. The candidate demonstrates financial need.

Applicants are required to write two short essays and, if and when shortlisted, a headnote for a Weekly Law Report based on an unreported transcript of a recent judgment selected by ICLR.

The current Award is for pupils starting their pupillage in 2021. The closing date for this year’s award was 31 March 2021. We will update this page when the award is officially announced.
